Ampenan is an old city of
mataram. Yes, The town is not a major attraction, not as popular as Senggigi
beach although located near it. Ampenan is the jumping-off point for Senggigi a
few kilometers up the coast. Ampenan surely offers different story angel and
complement your travelling experience in Lombok area.
Ampenan has historical story. The city used to
serve as one of the economic and trade center. Ampenan was the original old
port and was once Lomboks main port. It was built during Dutch colonial times
around 1948 to 1950, used as a haven ports. It is said that the port is
operated until 1973 before the main port moved to Lembar. It is now the fisherman
boat places.
Ruins of fleet can be
seen scattered at the Ampenan beach, the witness of the glory in its era. We
also can still witness the population here as the mixture of Chinese, Arabs and
Melayu. the difference is also described from its building architecture. But
one thing for sure off course is that the difference does not create
separation. The local lives in harmony. Vihara bodhi darma is said
constructed at 1804.
For me, the uniqueness of the Ampenan beach is its
long black sand coastline. Nowadays, as the nearest beach from Mataram makes
Ampenan becomes the favorite place for locals to see sunset and to play in the
beach. Spending time admiring the beautiful sunset, We can also taste satay
grilled squids and fish. It is easily found at warung and kaki lima (food
carts) alongside the beach side.To get to the spot from Mataram or from
Mandalika terminal Sweta, We can take public transport (the local yellow bemo)
that shuttle back and forth to kebun ruwek Ampenan. We can then take a walk to
the beach in just a few minutes.
The road sign is very
helpful in determining the right direction. The fare is cheap just Rp.5000 per
person. Make sure you have fix money to pay, otherwise often there is not
return on changes.
One of festive worthy to
wait is Ampenan old town cultural festival. Event such as Creative industry
exhibition, culinary exhibition, and sampan racing are performed. Other
traditional performance all around West Nusa Tenggara is exhibited.
